Paul Scholes has praised the “phenomenal” impact Bruno Fernandes has had on Manchester United and admitted that the Portuguese playmaker is better than him.
Fernandes scored a goal and set up another for Marcus Rashford, but United tied twice to tie 2-2 at Leicester City on Boxing Day.
He has now contributed 26 goals and 16 assists in 44 games since arriving from Sporting Lisbon in late January.
Fernandes has been so transformative for United on a Premier League table of results since his BT Sport-produced debut showed United just two points behind reigning champion Liverpool, but one game short.
And Old Trafford legend Scholes was effusive in his praise of Fernandes and the impression he has made.
“What he’s doing is phenomenal, really,” Scholes told United’s Tunnel Insider program.
I think if you look, since it’s been [at the club]United would be the best in the league if they won their remaining game, with more points than Liverpool, which is strange to think because they have had such a bad start to the season.
‘Well, you thought it was a bad start to the season, but they’re still there and I think they can only get better.
‘The numbers it has produced are just ridiculous. Hopefully it continues.
Scholes scored 155 goals in 718 games during a stellar United career that spanned 19 seasons and earned him all the major honors, but he believes Fernandes can usurp him.
He’s better than me. He is different from me. Score more goals than me, create more goals than me, ”added Scholes.
‘I would like to play with him, probably behind him would be fine. But no, it was sensational, a big difference.
“I think before he came to the team, United could hardly create an opportunity with some of the things they were playing, but now it seems they can score three, four or five goals in every game.”
United’s draw at Leicester saw them slide to fourth in the Premier League table after the weekend’s games, but there is a quick chance to get back on the winning track when they host Wolves on Wednesday night.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his team face a quick change to a home game against Aston Villa on New Year’s Day.
