The Portuguese colony at Wolverhampton Wanderers has been a clear part of their recent success with Nuno Espirito Santo breaking the club’s record by selecting seven to start against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday night.
Wolves’ bid for the Portuguese has gone well, as they first promoted to the Premier League in 2017/18 and finished seventh in 2018/19 and 2019/20, as well as qualifying for the Europa League.
Now, against Spurs, Santo has chosen Pedro Neto, Rubén Neves, Daniel Podence, Rui Patricio, Fabio Silva, Vitinha, Nelson Semedo, Roderick Miranda and Joao Moutinho to start for the first time in the club’s history.
The Wolves’ side is completed by English, Conor Coady, Brazilian Marcal, Moroccan Romain Saiss and Spanish Adama Traore.
At Molineux, there are three times as many Portuguese footballers as there are English players, and the club has also paid tribute to its link to Selecao with a third kit that closely resembles that of the Portuguese national team.
