Gylfi Sigurdsson scored the only goal of the match and Everton moved into second place with a win over Sheffield United, who remain last with two points.
The result left Everton with 29 points from 15 games, two behind champion and leading Liverpool who play at home to West Bromwich Albion on Sunday, while the winless Blades remained in the background with two points.
In the absence of several key players, Everton looked subdued in the first half and nearly fell behind in the 16th minute when Ben Godfrey cleared a scrambled shot from David McGoldrick off the line.
The visitors approached the 29th when Dominic Calvert-Lewin chest-chested a long pass from Michael Keane and unleashed a fierce volley from the edge of the penalty area just off the far post.
Oliver Burke fired a close-range shot from a tight angle into the face of the goal at the other end at the edge of halftime before the game died down in the second half and it looked like he was heading for a sterile draw.
But Icelandic midfielder Sigurdsson scored in the 80th minute, planting a calm shot that edged goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale in the far corner after a good job from substitute Bernard and midfielder Abdoulaye Doucoure.
