Real Madrid are ready to launch when David Alaba’s contract expires next summer, getting ahead of the race for the Bayern Munich star as Manchester United on the run.
The Austrian will have six months to fulfill his contract with the German champions in January, and will be able to discuss a move elsewhere after having turned down an offer of £ 200,000 a week.
Bayern have admitted defeat to Karl-Heinz Rummenigge stating that they “did everything possible” to achieve a renewal.
While Manchester United have pulled out of a move after learning of Alaba’s strong salary demands, Real Madrid appear to be in the best position to complete the free transfer, according to Athletic.
The finances of the Spanish have been devastated by the Covid-19 pandemic and would not reach a free transfer for the 28-year-old, but his salary budget allows the signing of the star.
Alaba emerged from the Munich Under-17 national team, playing a crucial role in the team since 2011 and clinching nine Bundesliga titles.
He has also lifted the Champions League twice, playing most of his career at Bayern as a left back before his diverse skill set saw him used as a center back and midfield.
Munich’s desperation to keep the defender is understandable, with Alaba at the heart of Hansi Flick’s leading Bundesliga squad this season once again.
“We had a lot of conversations, but we wanted answers from him by the end of October,” Rummenigge said.
‘This did not happen and I do not know if we will return to negotiations.
‘What I want to make clear is that our offer showed exactly how much we value him, but he did not accept it’
“I don’t know anything about the Real Madrid rumors.”
