NDC Election Demonstrations Are Illegal – PNP Secretary

Executives of the South Techiman Electoral District of the New Patriotic Party (PNP) have condemned what they described as illegal agitations and protests by supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) over the result of the parliamentary elections.

The Electoral Commission declared Mr. Martin Agyei Mensah-Korsah, the PNP parliamentary candidate, as the winner of the constituency seat in the recently concluded general elections.

But NDC supporters in the constituency had since protested the EC statement, claiming that NDC parliamentary candidate Christopher Bayere won the election.

Describing the actions of NDC supporters as illegal, Mr. Richard Asamoah, the PNP’s Techiman South constituency secretary challenged them to obey electoral laws and approved established procedures to seek redress.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Techiman, Asamoah called on NDC supporters to refrain from unnecessarily attacking the EC, saying that it was Constitutional Instrument (CI) 127 that was binding on the EC to do his job.

Flanked by other PNP Electoral District Executives, Mr. Asamoah indicated that unnecessary protests and agitation by NDC supporters in the Electoral District were generating unnecessary tension, fear and panic in Techiman Municipality.

The other PNP constituency Executives included Mr. Muniru Tanko, the constituency organizer, Mrs. Mary Berchie, the deputy organizer of young women, and Mr. Kwarkye Jibriel, the youth organizer.

Mr. Asamoah said it was illegal and unacceptable for the NDC to re-cross parliamentary votes, reversed the EC declaration and publicly declared his parliamentary candidate the winner of the seat.

Despite all these and other illegal behaviors demonstrated by NDC supporters in the constituency, Asamoah said the PNP kept silent because the Party appreciated peace and would not do anything stupid to disturb the peace in the area.

However, he condemned the post-election violence that broke out in the municipality of Techiman and claimed three lives, and expressed the Party’s condolences to the bereaved families.
