Ghana’s National Fire Service (GFS) has revealed that, as of December 21, the country has recorded 5,966 fire outbreaks this year.
Fire Chief Edwin Ekow Blankson, in his Christmas message issued Thursday, noted that recorded hells represent an increase of 4.9 percent compared to a figure of 5,673 in the same period in 2019.
According to him, although the significant increase can be attributed to the increase in domestic activities during the period of confinement, it also shows that the public has not yet given fire safety protocols the urgency and attention it deserves.
“The last quarter of the year has been a great test and challenge for the Service, as we had to deal with the numerous fire outbreaks in some of our major markets and other areas with all available resources.
“It is gratifying to note, however, that so far we have been able to weather the storm and bring some relief to the many people who were affected,” he said.
With less than 12 hours to go to Christmas, Blandson said fire prevention is a shared responsibility, urging everyone to emulate good safety practices by installing early warning and detection systems, as well as purchasing fire extinguishers.
“It is my wish that all the fire safety tips that are published receive the necessary attention to help prevent unwanted fires, but if it does occur, do not hesitate to call our emergency number, 112, as we have implemented a nationwide Red Alert program that will see more men waiting 24/7, ”he encouraged.
The director then commended all firefighting personnel for showing professionalism and commitment to serving the country.
“As an important partner in national development, we must appreciate the fact that every day provides an opportunity for the Service to rebrand itself to enhance its image and gain the necessary support and trust from the general public.
“Therefore, I urge all staff to be very disciplined and to live blameless. We must maintain a high level of professionalism, integrity and be a positive influence in the communities in which we live during the holiday season and beyond. “
