ARREST KENNEDY AGYAPONG NOW

We want to draw the attention of the Ghana Police Service to an inflammatory statement by Mr. Kennedy Agyapong on a live television program that has since circulated widely on social media.

In said video, Mr. Agyapong attempted to order the arsonists under his command to set fire to the residential properties of His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, Mr. Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, Colonel Rtd Larry Gbevlo-Lartey, Captain (Rtd) Joshua Hamidu Akamba and Attorney Baba Jamal. Beyond his threats, he also launched offensive and non-printable insults at the personalities of the aforementioned individuals.

We urge the police to arrest Mr. Agyapong as a matter of urgency for his unfortunate and life-threatening comments that tend to disturb the peace and cohesion of the country.

While Kennedy Agyapong is known to survive on insults and undemocratic conduct in public space, a direct threat of causing harm to leading political figures in this country is a mile too far, especially with his recent past in focus, where In a live television program, he threatened the life of the renowned journalist Ahmed Suale, for whom the latter was later murdered in cold blood.

The NDC is a democratic party and believes in the power of the state to control figures like Kennedy Agyapong. However, we have noted with concern the tendency of some state officials and institutions to indulge in partisan political patronage against the direct mandate conferred on them by the 1992 Constitution. We want the police service to fulfill its mandate impartially on this matter and take Mr. Agyapong to the reserve to win the trust of the masses.

The consequences of the state’s failure to maintain law and order while protecting the citizenry are obvious to all. We make this call knowing well that there are a large number of people at the service committed to the security of our beloved country. We do not need to remind the police of the swift manner in which a Power FM journalist was recently arrested and detained for days and is currently being prosecuted for allegedly insulting and threatening President Nana Akufo-Addo.

Please accept our congratulations on the season and do this country the service you swore to render with justice and integrity to all kinds of people.

Long live Ghana

Signed:

Hon. Kwesi Dawood

Regional communication officer
