The Teachers and Education Workers Union (TEWU) said it would withdraw service if the Fair Wages and Wages Commission (FWSC) failed to finalize its terms of service.
The Union noted the Commission’s inability to conclude negotiations with it, following the Union’s commitment to the Commission in June 2019 on the Review of the Conditions of Service for Unionized Personnel of Public Universities that expired in 2008.
This was in a statement signed by Mr. Mark Dankyira Korankye, the Secretary General of TEWU and Mr. Ambrose Yao Kwadwodza, the National President, TEWU and copied to the Ghana News Agency in Accra.
“It is regrettable that for almost two years, the Commission has not been able to finalize matters with TEWU on service status, while our members continue to work, in a very difficult situation,” he said.
The statement said the Union held the view that the Commission’s failure to conclude the negotiations on the Terms of Service was unfair and in bad faith.
“Our universities are expected to reopen in January 2021, and our members will continue to provide their services and yet will be working under a condition of service that has not been reviewed for nearly 12 years.”
The statement said that the Union will be advised if the Commission does not immediately conclude the negotiation on the new condition of service for the Unionized Personnel of Public Universities before the beginning of the academic year, in January 2021, which would come with an additional responsibility with the admission of the first group of graduates of the Free High School.
