President Nana Akufo-Addo will take office for her second term within Parliament on January 7, 2021 and not in Independence Square as has always been the case, announced Deputy Minister of Information Pius Enam Hadzide.
He said the decision was made by the 2020 presidential transition team.
It follows a request made by Majority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu during the opening of the office facilities under the Parliament’s Physical Infrastructure Projects on November 3, 2020.
The Majority Leader, at the time, requested that subsequent swearing-in of the Presidents-elect of the Republic take place in Parliament and before Parliament, in accordance with Ghanaian law and international practice.
Addressing a press conference today, Wednesday 23 December 2020, Mr. Hadzide said: “The Transition Team has considered the request of the Ghanaian Parliament favorably, as stated by H.E. Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu and therefore has decided that the inauguration of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on January 7, 2021 will take place before Parliament and on the premises of Parliament ”.
To this end, “the Inauguration subcommittee is working with Parliament to ensure a successful inauguration and reporting of COVID,” he added.
