During the “summer” transfer window in October, Manchester United made a move for Amad Diallo, who currently plays for Atalanta in Serie A.
The 18-year-old Ivorian right-back has been on United’s scouting radar since 2016, when he was spotted playing at the U-15 level, and the club has been tracking his progress ever since. Many in Serie A feel that Diallo is one of the most exciting young prospects in Italian football.
It was an interesting move in October because the two teams reached an agreement that Diallo could stay in Italy and play for Atalanta for the first half of the season.
The main holdup was the fact that Diallo was waiting to receive an Italian passport, which would allow him to obtain a work permit to join United, and that came to fruition this week.
With that hurdle complete, Diallo will fly to England in early January to complete his transfer to United, a 25 million euro (£ 22.38 million) deal plus add-ons.
Diallo has made five games for the Italian team, scoring once, but has been mostly on the bench this season.
He is not eligible for the FA Youth Cup and United’s Under-23 team does not have a game until January 18, but with the new rules regarding teams that have additional substitutes, it is possible that Diallo could be included in the United’s senior team, especially on loan from Odion Ighalo. Chinese Super League club Shanghai Shenhua comes to an end next month.
