Christian Wollnik, a team leader at Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), has observed that the garment industry could become a work force for Ghana.
He said that GIZ was therefore considering expanding its involvement in that sector beyond its existing projects.
Wollnik said this during a training session for representatives of 12 member companies of the Ghana Garment Manufacturers Association (AGAM) on how to prevent the transmission of coronavirus in a factory.
The training aims to support the positive development of the industry, which has seen significant improvement in recent years.
He said: “AGAM is, of course, our first point of contact for this.”
The training was led by experienced public health experts and provided recommendations on how to develop robust hygiene concepts for production sites.
Mr. Wollnik said that the training was a starting signal for deeper cooperation between AGAM and GIZ.
Mr. Gregory Kankoh, President of AGAM, expressed his satisfaction with the training and said: “For our members, the training was useful. We are all doing everything possible to overcome the crisis and, although many of our factories are already well positioned, there is always room for improvement ”.
He said that the best thing was that factories could learn not only from technical experts, but also from each other.
Training participants were encouraged to organize the training pieces themselves and pass on the acquired content to their staff.
At the end of the training, the participating factories received some polyethylene tanks, Veronica buckets, masks and disinfectants.
Participants also discussed managing a potential COVID-19 outbreak, for example how the workforce should be informed, who should be screened, and how to ensure production can be sustained in the event of an outbreak.
