Northern Region records first COVID-19 death

The Northern Region has recorded its first COVID-19 death.

The death of the patient, a female believed to be in her 70s died at the Tamale Central Hospital (TCH) on Monday, May 11, 2020 while on admission.

Her sample tested at the Public Health Reference Laboratory (PHRL) at the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH) returned positive.

The victim is also the first COVID-19 case to be recorded at the TCH.

The patient who is said to have no travel history and also no physical contact with any positive case is said to have a previous history of chest problems among other ailment.

The deceased has since been buried by the burial team in their full Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) with disinfection done at the various places she visited and admitted to at the facility.

Measures taken

The Medical Superintendent of the TCH, Dr Mahamadu Mbiniwaya who made this known to the Graphic Online said in all, 29 staff who came into contact with the patient from the out patients department (OPD), Female ward and the withholding center have gone into self quarantine for two weeks until further notice while their samples have been taken and sent to TTH for testing.

He said the staffs who are in self quarantine would be monitored on daily basis at home.

I added that contact tracing has also commenced.
