NDC Secretary General Johnson Asiedu Nketia has criticized the National Peace Council, claiming that its silence during the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-elections has contributed to the violence recently witnessed in the Techiman South constituency.
Various groups, including the Council, have called on the NDC to go to court for redress rather than engage in violent protests.
But speaking on The Probe Sunday, Asiedu Nketia said the calls are well-intentioned but misdirected.
He stressed that the party will use all legal means at its disposal on the platforms at its disposal.
“If someone has good intentions and seeks peace in the country, then why does he call the person who is being beaten and say that his cry is disturbing the environment? He doesn’t care about the person he hits.
“The Peace Council is also part of this problem. When the Election Commission was doing the wrong thing and the ruling party was attacking the people in Ayawaso West Wuogon and the Peace Council came in, they tolerated it.
“All they said is ‘let’s find peace’ and they pushed for appeasement. Seeking peace means seeking lasting peace and justice precedes peace. So if you want any other artificial peace without justice, you are just postponing the problem, ”he said.
But the president of the Peace Council, the Rev. Dr. Adu Gyamfi, maintains that protests in the streets are not the way to go.
Speaking on JoyNews’ AM show Monday, Reverend Adu Gyamfi endorsed requests for a forensic audit of the results.
He also revealed that Council members have approached the PNP to persuade them not to engage in retaliatory attacks.
