Supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have attacked officers from the Manhyia police station in the Ashanti region demanding the release of one of its members.
This occurred during a demonstration in Kumasi against the declaration of Nana Akufo-Addo as president-elect in the recently concluded elections.
Police say the group acted on false information as the incident occurred before police arrested one of the members at the end of the protest.
The divisional crime officer at the Manhyia Police Station told JoyNews that “we explained to them that no one has been arrested. The protesters will not agree.
“They claimed that one of the protesters had been detained here, which was not correct. It was completely untrue. Then they came to demand the release of that person, ”said DSP Charles Appiah.
According to him, “they threw stones and some policemen were injured. A vehicle was also damaged ”.
However, he did not specify how many of them were injured, adding that “we were finally able to take control and they left.
Earlier today, police water tanks were needed to put out burning car tires in protest against what supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) party call a rigged election.
Others have expressed their displeasure at the outcome of the elections and some have even protested at the headquarters of the Electoral Commission (EC) in Accra.
NDC presidential candidate John Mahama has described the EC verdict as fictitious in favor of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).
