With his goal against Valencia, Lionel Messi tied Edson Arantes do Nascimento ‘Pelé’ for the most goals scored with a single club.
They are two of the greatest in history and here are 10 things the two soccer legends have in common.
1. Most goals scored for a single club
Pelé scored a total of 643 goals for Santos, while Messi has done the same for Barcelona.
2. Appearances at the Camp Nou
Messi has scored 378 goals at the Camp Nou. Pelé played three times in the same stadium: in 1959 and 1960, scoring three goals in those first two visits, and again in 1963.
3. The number 10 shirt
Pelé wore No. 10 his entire career, first at Santos and then at New York Cosmos. Messi started with the number 30 and then wore the number 19 before wearing the number 10 for the first time in the 2008/09 season in Barcelona.
4. A debut in a friendly match
Both players debuted with the first team in friendly matches. In 1956, Pelé made his official debut for Santos at the age of 15. The rival was Corinthians. Messi made his first first-team appearance in a friendly against Porto in 2003 at the age of 16.
5. Incredible goal statistics
Pelé scored 757 goals in 786 games (an average of 0.93 goals per game). Messi, for his part, has an average of 0.79.
6. Various personal awards
They have both won numerous elite awards and individual awards, but there are two that stand out. First, the World Cup Golden Ball, which Pele won in 1970 and Messi won in 2014. Second, both were nominated in Time’s ‘Time’s 100: The Most Important People of the Century’, as The Brazilian topped the list in 1999, while Messi did the same in 2012.
7. The youngest World Cup scorers from their countries
The two stars hold the title of being the youngest World Cup scorers in their respective countries. Pelé opened his World Cup account at the age of 16 years and 259 days. The Argentine did the same with 18 years and 357 days.
8. Similar height
All its brightness is produced by quite small bodies. Neither Pele nor Messi are taller than 175 cm. Pelé stood at 173cm during his career and Messi at 170cm.
9. Government awards
His incredible achievements also extend to government awards. In 1992, Pele received the National Order of Merit from the Brazilian government. In 2019, Messi received one of the most important distinctions in Catalonia, the Cross of Saint George.
10. The most international goals of South America
Pelé is the South American top scorer at the international level, with 77. Messi is chasing him with 71. This is one of the few records that the Argentine forward has left to break.
