The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has refuted claims that police in the Northern Region found an AK47 in the office of Savelugu MP-elect Abdulai Jacob Idriss.
At a press conference, NDC North Regional Secretary Mohammed Abdul Salam insisted that the weapon was found in the party’s constituency office in Savelugu.
He described the party office as an open space, where many people enter, and as such, the weapon found there must not be associated with the elected deputy who has not yet assumed office.
He stressed that the office was opened, while party supporters rejoiced after Idriss was declared an elected deputy, adding that anyone could infiltrate the weapon to implicate him.
“The elected deputy does not have an office, he is well known to all, the deputies operate from party offices with party executives,” he added.
Salam said the police did not invite any NDC officials prior to the search, adding that the police broke into the office without a search warrant.
“The elected deputy is, however, available on Monday, December 21, with his lawyer, to be accompanied by NDC officials to the police to take his statement of caution,” he said.
Salam said the girl who was shot one day after the elections in Savelugu was a supporter of the NDC, whose death occurred during the party’s jubilation, and indicated that it was surprising that an NDC official was implicated in the killing.
He warned the New Patriotic Party (PNP) in the constituency to abandon plans to litigate the Savelugu constituency seat and asked police to investigate a suspect identified as Gabbah, who had allegedly shot the elected deputy, on sight of members of the public.
The Regional Secretary said that despite the allegations made against the elected deputy from Savelugu, the NDC would vouch for him, as he was a member of royalty with a clean record and therefore no group or individual could tarnish his reputation, having served in the public. service for more than 27 years, and no criminal record.
