A fire in a local market in the city of Asankragua, in the Western Region, destroyed four stores.
The incident that occurred shortly before 11 p.m. on Friday, December 18, also destroyed properties worth thousands of Cedis.
Residents had to fight hell after distress calls to the Amanfi West Division of the Ghana National Fire Service went unanswered.
Some neighbors reported that Service officials in the municipality watched helplessly as the fire continued to burn stores as a result of a broken fire tender for the past six months.
Young people in the area intervened and controlled the fire within two hours.
“When we called the fire service, they told us that their fire tender had broken down. Can you imagine that an entire Municipal Assembly does not have a fire tender?
“So the young people here, including me, we had to take care of putting out the fire,” one resident told Accra-based JoyNews.
Another added: “I am impressed with everyone’s contribution. We did everything possible to put out the fire. But I beg our leaders to fix our fire bids because next time, we may not be so lucky. “
For his part, the grade one district officer of the Ghanaian fire service in the municipality, Judge Agyee, who confirmed his inability to control the fire, said there was nothing his team could do without a fire tender.
