Everton have won eight of their 14 Premier League games so far this season
Everton ensured that manager Carlo Ancelotti celebrated the first anniversary of his appointment with a victory over Arsenal that took them to second place in the Premier League to add to the problems of his counterpart Mikel Arteta.
Ancelotti’s side have already beaten Chelsea, Leicester City and Arsenal in the space of seven days and while there were some anxious moments in the second half, this was a well deserved victory.
Everton took the lead in the 22nd minute when Rob Holding deflected a Dominic Calvert-Lewin pass on Bernd Leno, but Arsenal were tied 10 minutes before the break when Nicolas Pepe scored from the penalty spot after Tom Davies fouled to Ainsley Maitland-Niles.
The Gunners barely deserved to be level and Everton were back ahead at the edge of the break as Yerry Mina headed at the near post from a corner.
Arsenal improved after the break, David Luiz saw a deflected shot to the post, but Everton also had opportunities and this defeat leaves Arteta’s team in 15th place as they have no reason to celebrate their first anniversary in a few days.
Ancelotti gets the acclaim
It was almost a year since Ancelotti came to Merseyside from Italy to confirm his appointment at Everton before sitting down and watching a shocking goalless draw with Arsenal at Goodison Park.
Arteta, Arsenal’s new manager, sat a few seats away to watch his new team and supposedly usher in a new era of optimism.
Ancelotti can inspect the Premier League table with greater satisfaction than Arteta after an excellent week in what was hailed as a crucial month and the Everton manager received high praise from fans gathered on Gwladys Street after the final whistle.
Everton had to dig deep here, but they did and deserved their victory despite surviving a few shaves near the end.
Calvert-Lewin put on another magnificent display, but it was two of Ancelotti’s signings that really caught the eye, namely Abdoulaye Doucoure and Ben Godfrey.
Doucoure was outstanding, but it was Godfrey, 22, England’s under-21 defender signed from Norwich City, who was arguably the outstanding player of the game.
Godfrey is playing in an unknown left-back role, but he put in a superb performance, thunderous in the inning and showing a surprising turn of speed to lead a counterattack in the second half.
Everton have had an excellent week with three wins after a difficult period following their brilliant start.
