Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live’s Football Daily podcast, England international Kalvin Phillips has named Liverpool star Mohamed Salah the best player he has ever played against.
The Leeds midfielder is currently enjoying his first season in top-flight football, and received something of a baptism of fire on the opening day of the season when he faced defending champion Liverpool.
Phillips was talking about how difficult Premier League football is finding so far, and said that Salah was a prime example of the increase in quality, naming him the best player he’s ever played against.
“Once I got to the last third, everything went much faster, and going to Liverpool in that first game, it will not be much more difficult than you think, the first three they have and the way they pass a ball” Phillips said.
“The main thing was when we went into the last third or even the third of the defense, like how fast they were moving the ball and how sharp they were. I played Salah, he scored a hat trick in that game, he’s the best player I’ve ever played against so far, he was so sharp, he was amazing. “
It’s great to hear Salah getting some well-deserved accolades from his fellow pro, but this should come as no surprise.
Imagine being in Phillips place. His first game in top-flight football and he lost 4-3 thanks to a hat-trick from one of the most lethal attackers in the division. No wonder why I was so in awe of him.
To be honest, most Premier League players would probably say the same of Salah, but it’s still great to hear such a talented player talk about Liverpool’s talisman in this way.
