2 police officers, civilian arrested for illegal possession of firearm and ammunition

Two police officers and one civilian were detained by the Accra Region Police Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for possession of firearms and ammunition without legal authorization.

38-year-old L / Cpl Emmanuel Abusah Yao, 37-year-old L / Cpl Sulayman Yusuf and civilian Abdul Samed Yussif, 40, aka Matata were arrested on Friday, December 18, 2020.

According to the police, Charlie SWAT’s team received information that a group of men had firearms and ammunition in their possession and were offering them for sale.

The police team led by DSP Oti Prempeh headed to the Achimota area where they encountered suspects Emmanuel Abusah Yao and Dokpor, 32, who was a driver.

They claimed they had the full caliber of weapons for sale to their customers within the metropolis of Accra.

The police then and feigned interest in the transaction.

Subsequent surveillance of suspect Emmanuel Abusah Yao revealed that he met with suspect Suleman Yussif in Alajo, behind the Presbyterian Church.

On Friday around 0800 hours, the suspects contacted the police to inform them that their supplier was ready to supply the weapons in Alajo.

During the transaction, the merchant, Matata arrived with his unregistered motorcycle and brought a bag containing an unregistered Taruss pistol and offered it for sale.

The police then arrested all the suspects in the cause of the transaction.

A search of the Matata bag revealed 17 rounds of 9mm ammunition, 59 rounds of M16 ammunition, 38 rounds of AK 47 assault rifle ammunition, and 58 rounds of G3 ammunition.

However, nothing incriminating was found about the other two suspects, Yao and Sulayman.

When searches were made at the residence places of all the suspects, three rounds of 9mm ammunition were found in Matata’s room in the Nima ditch.

However, nothing was found in the others’ home.

Police revealed that it was during interrogations that they discovered that Emmanuel Abusah Yao and Sulayman Yusuf are all Lance Corporals stationed at Visibility’s headquarters in Accra.

The weapon and ammunition are currently in police custody.
