Royals’ hopes of turning their poor fortunes in Ghana’s Premier League have suffered a severe blow
Ghana and Legon Cities forward Asamoah Gyan has been out of action for two weeks, club manager Bashir Hayford revealed.
The 35-year-old was conspicuously absent when the Royals fell in a 2-1 home loss to the Ebusua Dwarfs in the Ghana Premier League on Friday.
His absence is a huge blow to struggling Legon, who hoped to guide the forward back to full fitness to propel his battle into the top flight.
“He [Gyan] he is injured and cannot play at this time. He visited the team physio and they asked him to stay out for two weeks to recover, “Hayford said of the former Sunderland and Udinese star’s absence from Friday’s game, Kickgh reported.
After 17 years abroad, Gyan, Ghana’s all-time top scorer of 51 gaosl, returned home in October and joined Legon on a one-year contract.
His debut for the Royals was delayed until a third-week draw with Medeama late last month.
He continued to play for the club after two games, but all of his appearances to date have been from the bench, a situation Hayford believes has impacted his team’s performance in the league so far.
“Asamoah Gyan, if he had 50 percent of his form, it wouldn’t have been a problem, but his form is completely down … We have to work on him,” Hayford said after last week’s 1-0 loss. before Asante Kotoko.
“If you get 50% of your return, it will make a difference.
“This is the fifth game and we haven’t even turned a ball into the net.
“That is what I identified immediately I entered the team… I told them that we have no finalists. So we are working on that.
“Scoring goals is an art and it’s about boosting the confidence of scoring goals in them and it’s not easy. It’s not a week, it’s not two weeks. Well, we’ll get through it.”
In the twilight of his career, Gyan has been plagued with injuries, a situation that greatly affected his progress as Chinese club Shanghai SIPG, Turkish Kayserispor and the Indian Super League withdrew from NorthEast United.
Legon is still looking for his first win of the season, he sits last in the Premier League table.
