Muslims across the country are unhappy with comments from Supreme Court Justice nominee Judge Issifu Tank Amadu about wearing Hijab in schools.

The Court of Appeals judge on Monday told Parliament’s investigative committee that he saw no problem in secular schools preventing Muslim girls from wearing the Hijab at the primary and secondary levels.

However, he added that it becomes a problem if you take the same posture in the workplace.

But commenting on the comments, Islamic scholar Sheikh Bagaya told Morning Starr host Francis Abban that the judge’s position is contrary to the dictates of the Koran.

“The theme of the hijab is not direction or instruction for women but also for men. It is the standard teaching in the Quran. As a Muslim scholar, I am happy that he is occupying such a prestigious position and all Muslims are happy for him.

“But because of the statement you made yesterday, my understanding of the Muslim community is that it is very, very worrying for many Muslims,” he said.

Also expressing concern over the judge’s comment, Hijab Is My Identity campaign coordinator Bashiratu Kamal said the judge has disappointed the Muslim community and should wait for a reaction.

“It is quite unfortunate that people who are supposed to be custodians of the law have such opinions. I know he is an authority on religion than I am, but looking at him from a human rights point of view, I was very disappointed.

“I see him as an elder and leader of the Muslim community and I see him as someone older than me.” It is unfortunate for him to say this because he is speaking not only as an individual but as someone who is well invested in the law. In the Supreme Court I will have enough confidence to appear before him in the Supreme Court if I have a problem with the Hijab in my workplace considering his point of view on the matter, ”he asked himself.

She said the campaign will consult with other groups and oppose the judge’s “bias”.

“We can’t be comfortable working with someone like that. He should apologize and, for me, I seriously believe that his appointment should be reviewed again.”
