Parliament’s Defense and Interior Committee Chairman Seth Acheampong says the minority’s call for the resignation of Inspector General of Police (IGP) James Oppong-Boanuh is misplaced.
He believes that the IGP should have the opportunity to report to Parliament on the operational activities of the Service during and after the 2020 election exercise.
The Minority Interior and Defense spokesman, James Agalga, after the shootings that claimed the lives of five civilians, demanded today that the IGP be relieved of its position.
“The IGP appeared before Parliament and assured us that he was the chairman of the National Electoral Security Working Group… yet under his supervision, five lives have been lost, yet he is still in office. If I were in their shoes, I would do the honorable thing by resigning. But if he doesn’t quit, they should fire him, ”he said.
But talking to Joy news On Friday about the recorded cases of violence in the country during the elections, Mr. Acheampong is of the opinion that, to the extent that the Ghana Police Service must be held accountable for its actions, fans and supporters of candidates and political parties also must be checked.
“If you are doing a full deployment assessment, we did well as a country and we should give ourselves a pat on the back. However, we should condemn the excesses.
“While he admonishes and speaks with the security personnel so that they also contain the slightest provocation, we must admonish ourselves as farmers to make sure that we assume our civic duties in a responsible way so as not to exceed ourselves,” he added.
Meanwhile, the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) has revealed that investigations are underway to unravel the personnel behind the shootings.
IGP James Oppong-Boanuh will appear before Parliament next week.
