Bawumia’s ‘alleged’ intervention in the approval of the Public Universities Bill is insincere – Clement Apaak

Builsa South MP, Dr. Clement Apaak, described Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia’s intervention in passing the public universities bill as a sham.

The Builsa South deputy has explained that the measure is an attempt to redeem the Veep’s image and “let it seem distant from the challenges the current government has had with the academic fraternity.”

This comes after the processes to pass the Public Universities Bill were halted following a meeting held by Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia with the UTAG leadership and other senior members of Parliament.

However, Dr. Apaak has alleged that the intervention “is a ploy to promote Akufo-Addo Dr. Bawumia and Mathew Opoku’s preferred ticket for 2024.”

Furthermore, he noted that Dr. Bawumia had knowledge of the processes involved in passing the bill prior to its recent appearance in parliament for approval.

“Didn’t Bawumia know that the bill’s withdrawal was to allow for more stakeholder consultation, which it didn’t? And since that did not happen, what sanctions have been imposed on the Minister of Education who did not comply or refused to comply with the instructions?

“Are we to believe that the Akufo-Addo government, its Minister of Education and the Chairman of the Education Committee have acted on the bill? remove it and pass it on without the knowledge of Akufo-Addo and Dr. Bawumia? he said.

Therefore, he has urged the public to ignore the vice president’s move.

“So make no mistake, Bawumia’s alleged intervention is not sincere, it is to make him appear innocent and distant from the challenges that the current government, of which he and Mathew Opoku Prempeh are key members, has had with the academic fraternity.

“More specifically, Bawumia’s alleged intervention is to cleanse the ‘sins’ that his future running mate in 2024 has committed against the academic community.

“The members of the PNP in the opposite camps do not feel comfortable with the duo, so schemes like this should be expected in these last days of the current government,” he added.
