Why Heinze?
Felipe Cardenas, writer of the soccer team: Atlanta United headquarters has gone public with its desire to return to the offensive style of play that led to an MLS Cup in 2018. After struggling to maintain that identity with De Boer, Atlanta United has made clear its intentions that the product in the field it is an important part of the brand. Heinze’s tactical philosophy fulfills this goal. The 42-year-old Heinze instilled an aggressive system at his most recent club, Velez Sarsfield, which featured a full-field press and proactive possession.
What changes could Heinze make?
Cardenas: Personnel changes are expected to occur immediately under Heinze. Atlanta United president Darren Eales told local radio this week that the club’s next coach would actively recruit players who fit his system. But aside from the inevitable roster adjustments, the signing of Heinze will result in another change in culture at Atlanta United. Heinze is an intense and practical trainer, a stark contrast to De Boer’s low-key personality.
What’s next for Atlanta United?
Cardenas: The new signings will arrive this winter. Athletic reported this week that Boca Juniors central midfielder Agustín Almendra could join Heinze in Atlanta. If Marcelino Moreno’s contract is bought down to the TAM level, Almendra could become Atlanta United’s newest designated player. There will also be additional transfers that should improve the current squad.
However, the most important thing is the expectations that Heinze will have to meet. Atlanta United missed the playoffs for the first time in 2020. Returning to the top of the Eastern Conference will be the Argentine coach’s first job.
