How Blackburn Almost Buys Lewandowski

Sky Sports NewsAlan Myers and Keith James recall how a volcanic eruption prevented future FIFA Men’s Player of the Year from arriving at Ewood Park ten years ago.

In 2010, Blackburn was in the middle of the Premier League table, with coach Sam Allardyce eager for his team to take advantage of more opportunities created by Morten Gamst Pedersen and David Dunn.

Goals were proving hard to come by for the Rovers at the time, during the 2009/10 campaign their forwards Jason Roberts, Franco Di Santo, Nikola Kalinic, David Hoilett collected just eight between them in the top flight.

Attacking midfielder Dunn was their top scorer with nine goals of the Rovers’ 41 in the Premier League that season.

The club’s head of recruiting, Martyn Glover, came in.

Glover learned of a forward who had scored 21 goals in 34 games for Poland’s Lech Poznan that season; He had a plan that may have created a surprising legend to rival the one created by Alan Shearer.
