Arsène Wenger is on stage! In fact, it is there, physically. Remember that he is FIFA’s head of global development and he looks very good.
“Now I have a greater educational responsibility and that is also a huge challenge,” he says.
But, Gullit asks, what does it take to be a world-class coach? (I should have asked that 20 years ago Ruud etc and so on)? “You need experience, you need more than ever to be a good communicator and also have a good resistance to stress.”

Son Heung-min wins the Puskas award!
He takes it for that jet heel sprint and ends up against Burnley! “I received the ball in my own box and it was the best option to pass, but I couldn’t find anyone, so I tried to dribble,” he laughs. Don’t blame your teammates!
18:23
We are in the Puskas award now. Who scored the most beautiful goal? It’s nice to see Son’s goal on the list, but I’m more of a Jordan Ayew man …
18:20
Manuel Neuer is the best male goalkeeper!
If it is. Was it your best year for Bayern? “It is one of the best years of my career, we are so confident in what we have done and especially in the summer it was incredible for all of us and we are very happy,” says Zooms.
18:19
“Frankly Messi and Ronaldo should reject their nominations in this category”, writes Krishnamoorthy. “They have nothing left to prove and the nominations can act as an incentive for other notable players. But ego seems to be the default middle name for these players. “
I think that’s tough. They have been consistently brilliant for years. And very good this year too. But I wouldn’t have them like the other two in my top three either.
18:17
(Refers to Kjetil Knutsen from Bodo / Glimt). This is not bad at all either. What an achievement that was. It feels like a gala for all the handsome boys, this.
18:15
Sarah Bouhaddi is the best female goalkeeper!
The legend of Lyon takes it! Big recognition for the 34-year-old after such a stellar career at the top.
18:13
Pascal Zuberbuhler, a veteran of Swiss World Cup teams who probably came out in the second round on penalties after a goalless draw, is going to help on stage with the goalkeepers first place award. Perhaps current regulations mean that all glamorous attendees must be locally sourced, in which case I will ask Alain Sutter to reveal the winner of the top gong.
18:10
Rashford wins the FIFA Foundation award – very well deserved indeed.
18:09
We also hear about an authentic football Best of 2020: Marcus rashford. He would be in my top three, look at the year we’ve had and see what he has managed to do on and off the field. Tonight he plays for Manchester United against Sheffield United.
18:07
Now Gianni Infantino, seemingly in front of a green screen, he is slightly spectrally addressing us from … somewhere other than FIFA headquarters. It looks a bit like it’s in Knightmare. It is a noble speech, in which the front-line workers are thanked for the efforts during the pandemic that we have all appreciated so much, and now it is assured that football “has restarted again with hopes and smiles for millions of people.”
I wasn’t smiling at Craven Cottage last night, but those are good words. Infantino also offers his condolences to the loved ones of Diego Maradona and Paolo Rossi, two recent heartbreaking defeats in the sport.

Who are the presenters? Reshmin Chowdhury is one … and he stands alongside Ruud Gullit!
18:01
Anyway, we are – are – on the move in Zurich! Behind the presenters is a huge wall of tiled Zoom fans.
17:59
“It’s good that I am” writes Tim Stappard of Bielsa. Why not add a little joy to an uninspired list? Ronaldo and Messi definitely shouldn’t be there. “
These are fair points. Let’s be honest, cards on the table, no restrictions, say it like it is: these lists are usually wildly predictable, which is why a curve ball is always welcome. If Lewandowski is definitely not a curveball by the way, he doesn’t win the men’s one, I’ll lose what little faith I had left.
17:57
There is no Rapinoe on this year’s player roster, so there will be a new starter. Lucy Bronze was third last year; Wendie Renard is a rookie and Pernille Harder, who is surely the favorite, has already been anointed on these pages:
Is that … is that Marcelo Bielsa among the top three male coaches? Yes, it is, and it has received some feedback since the finalists were announced, and indeed the initial rosters. It’s strange. It’s good to see that he’s doing it with Leeds and they’re doing well, playing something great when everything goes well. But one of the top three in the world right now? He feels, on FIFA’s part, a bit like the uncle of someone in mid-life crisis trying to be cool.
17:45
Finalists tonight
Take a look at this little batch …
Male player: Cristiano Ronaldo / Robert Lewandowski / Lionel Messi
Female player: Lucy Bronze / Pernille Harder / Wendie Renard
Male goalkeeper: Alisson / Manuel Neuer / Jan Oblak
Female goalkeeper: Sarah Bouhaddi / Christiane Endler / Alyssa Naeher
Male coach: Marcelo Bielsa / Hansi Flick / Jurgen Klopp
Women’s coach: Sarina Wiegman / Emma Hayes / Jean-Luc Vassseur
Puskas Award (goal): Luis Suarez / Son Heung-min / Giorgian de Arrascaeta
We will develop some of these as we go along.

Hello
Welcome to our virtual coverage of FIFA’s “The Best” virtual ceremony. Look, we’re all stuck at home right now. And besides: it has been such a tumultuous year in soccer, regardless of the world at large, that anyone could guess who the best male and female players are this year.
Lionel messi he won the last time in the men’s half; for the women, Megan rapinoe is the reigning champion. Who would you like to replace them this year … or would you stay?
The ceremony is approaching, patron to patron. In the meantime, send me your best football moments of 2020, or just your best player, team, coach, and whatever else you can think of.
