Show maturity by accepting defeat, victory: Catholic bishops to political parties

The Ghana Conference of Catholic Bishops has asked the leaders of the two main political parties, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and their supporters to exercise restraint.

They call on NDC and its supporters to avoid all forms of violence following the declaration of the results of the presidential and parliamentary elections by the Election Commission.

The bishops urge concerned political parties to seek redress in court.

This comes after the NDC and its standard-bearer John Dramani Mahama rejected the election results declared by EC President Jean Mensa, accusing the EC of rigging the polls for current President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

Since the rejection of the results, there have been pockets of demonstrations by NDC supporters in some parts of the country.

In reaction to this development, the bishops in a statement noted that: “Having monitored recent developments on the political scene after the declaration of the result, we want to humbly appeal to all who have problems with the result to kindly address these issues to through legitimate procedures for redress. ”

The bishops also urged the Electoral Commission to continue to involve all political parties to ensure that all pending electoral issues and complaints are resolved in the interest of the country.

“Aware that in every competition there are sure to be winners and losers, we wish to urge all stakeholders to demonstrate maturity by accepting both defeat and victory. In this way, the reactions to either of the two conditions will be measured, modest and charitable towards each other, ”the statement said.
