Police in Lagos, the commercial capital of Nigeria, arrested 1,400 people in just one week for violating measures to stop the spread of the coronavirus after a blockade was lifted.
The measures include a curfew from 8:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. local time, mandatory use of face masks in public, and a ban on interstate travel.
In a statement, Police Commissioner Hakeem Odumosu said 820 people were arrested for violating the curfew, and about 130 people were arrested for not wearing face masks.
Lagos Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu warned Sunday that the blockade could be reintroduced if residents continue to ignore the rules of social distancing.
There have been concerns about the tactics used by security agents in the wake of the pandemic. The national human rights commission has said that the security forces killed at least 18 people during the shutdown.
President Muhammadu Buhari previously said the government would not tolerate human rights abuses by security agencies.
The West African country has confirmed 4,641 cases in total and 150 deaths.
