The Institute for Democratic Governance (IDEG) and the Civic Forum Initiative (CIF) have said that the results of the elections just ended on December 7 undoubtedly expressed the will of the electorate.
According to the two civil society organizations, it is now vital that political parties initiate a fluid dialogue on the outcome of the results.
Addressing journalists at a press conference, a member of the CIF, Dr. Angela Dwamena-Aboagye, explained: “The results of the elections express the will of the electorate and we urge the political parties to carefully exercise the new mandate. of governance over the next four years to make our democracy inclusive, more responsible and economically stronger ”.
On post-election interaction between political parties, Dr. Dwamena-Aboagye opined that “This dialogue should seek to clearly decipher and understand the mind of the electorate, as reflected in the ‘skirt and blouse’ voting patterns that we have witnessed, making meaning of it and identifying how it should be practically expressed in corporate governance during the period from January 2021 to January 2025 ”.
Dr. Dwamena-Aboagye added that the intention of the Democratic National Congress to go to court to challenge the results of the recently concluded 2020 elections does not contradict the peaceful protests, but they must first obtain police protection to do so.
“It is the political and civil right of all people to demonstrate when they disapprove of any national development. Therefore, members of political parties have the right to public protests and demonstrations. However, they must ensure police protection and ensure that their demonstration is not infiltrated by agents of provocation who may incite acts of violence, “he added.
IDEG Executive Director Dr. Emmanuel Akwetey called on the Electoral Commission to hold itself accountable and respond to Ghanaians in due time on the declared results of the elections.
