The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) says its preliminary investigations reveal that the Election Commission office in Fomena was intentionally set on fire on December 8.

Speaking to Division III (DO III) Officer JoyNews, Oscar Opoku said his team found a gallon of gasoline on the side of the building.

Eyewitness accounts also revealed that the office occupants smelled gasoline coming from the window before the fire started.

The Fire Service also found a hole drilled in the side of the building that they explained could have been used to bring fire into the office.

“The EC documents were burned, but the ballot boxes and papers are intact,” DO III Opoku told JoyNews’ Nana Yaw Gyimah.

The police have been tasked with handling the matter while the fire service completes its investigation.

The Fomena District Electoral Office was destroyed by fire shortly after the EC announced independent candidate Andrews Amoako Asiamah as the winner of Tuesday’s parliamentary elections.

At the time of the incident, some members of the PNP had gathered at the collection center, not far from the office.

They were protesting the results of the parliamentary elections, claiming it was rigged.

Aside from the fire, men associated with the ousted PNP deputy, Andrew Amoako Asiamah, turned independent candidate, were attacked by people allegedly working for some party executives in the area.

However, the party has denied all accusations with the parliamentary candidate saying “I will be a fool if I do that.”

Philip Ofori Asante explained that the electoral district has been a stronghold of the PNP, so the party will not intentionally attack voters.
