Zinedine Zidane’s Real Madrid have somehow reversed what was a bleak situation in November to become title contenders once again.
The November crisis, which has consisted of defeats against Valencia and Alavés, as well as a draw against Villarreal, has given way to the solidity of December.
In LaLiga Santander, Los Blancos have a three-game winning streak, which leaves them breathing down the necks of both Real Sociedad and Atlético de Madrid.
However, they have played two more games than their bitter rivals in the city. However, they currently have the momentum in the title race after beating Atlético last weekend.
Their good form began on December 5 when they beat Sevilla 1-0 at the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán Stadium to end a period of serious difficulties for Zidane’s men.
Prior to that result, Zidane had suffered two consecutive defeats for the second time this season, the first in mid-October against Cádiz and Shakhtar respectively.
Despite winning two league titles and three Champions, Zidane found himself on the brink with time running out.
His side weren’t fantastic against Sevilla, but it was a championship performance as they went ahead before achieving a result in a difficult place to visit.
It was in that game that we began to see elements of Real Madrid that conquered LaLiga Santander last season, with that impeccable record after blocking 10 straight wins.
Borussia Monchengladbach’s visit just four days later threatened to end Los Blancos’ European adventure in the group stage for the first time in their history.
However, Zidane’s team, boosted by the return of Sergio Ramos, returned to the height and was left with the 2-0 victory thanks to a brace from Karim Benzema.
Derby dominance
Real Madrid rounded out the end of a fantastic week with a 2-0 win over Atlético in the Madrid derby on Saturday.
Atlético had the opportunity to widen the gap to nine points at the top of the table, however Los Blancos matched them in all areas of the field.
Casemiro opened the scoring before Jan Oblak’s own goal midway through the second half ensured their victory.
