Mourinho had been talking about the differences between his team and Liverpool playing on Wednesday, noting that the champion is the result of “1,894 days of work” with Jurgen Klopp, compared to 390 at Tottenham. When Mourinho was told that he had never stayed in a job that long, he argued that it was mainly due to the different nature of the clubs he has been to.
The Spurs coach argued that he achieved success in all of them immediately, except at United, where different decisions had to be made.
“In a certain period of my career, with a club profile that I was taking in hand, we did not need that long to achieve success,” argued Mourinho. “We did it in Porto, Inter, Real [Madrid]Chelsea, both times we did it without that need for that longevity and also my desire to try different things and my crazy desire to go to many countries, and try to win it, and try to get different experiences in many different countries. It was perfect because it was about winning, and goodbye, and let’s try something else.
“The first club where I felt I needed time and they didn’t give me time was at Manchester United, because I felt that I left in the middle of the process, but I learn very early to respect decisions, which I did at United.
“We did what we did, we did what was possible and we kept going. I am happy, they are happy and we have a great relationship, which is something that I am very proud to always say, when I leave the clubs.” I have a very good relationship with everyone and United is one more example of that.
“Now, at Tottenham, I know the job profile I have in hand, and hopefully so far I am enjoying being at the club very, very much, I think the club is happy to work with me, so I see myself staying for a long time , but if we can accelerate the process, as if we were accelerating it, and doing good things as we are doing, of course we are not going to waste time ”.
United remains the only job where Mourinho has not won the title, having found themselves falling through the table in their final season in 2018-19 before a layoff in December. Their last match turned out to be away from Liverpool, a 3-1 loss.
