The Coalition of National Election Observers (CODEO) has advised the Electoral Commission (EC) to hold a public event to address the miscalculations that were detected in its initial statement of the results of the 2020 presidential elections.
CODEO in a press release said that it was not enough for the EC to use a press release to clear up errors one day after the initial statement.
According to CODEO, the “unfortunate” mistakes by the EC raise doubts about the integrity of the results of the presidential elections declared by the Commission on December 9, 2020 and other controversial parliamentary results.
“CODEO is of the opinion that given the stakes the EC should go beyond the passive publication of a press release to hold a public event to address the underlying issues regarding the identified miscalculations, in order to dispel any lingering concerns and doubts, “the statement said.
“In addition, the Coalition urges the EC to ensure that the source documents signed by the political parties, which support the declaration instrument, are consistent with the minutes of collation of the national results of the presidential candidates.”
Background
It will be recalled that the EC in a statement dated December 10, 2020, clarified the errors in the percentages of the results of the presidential elections declared on Wednesday, December 9, 2020.
The statement acknowledged that the EC Chair, Ms Jean Mensa, “inadvertently used 13,433,573 as the total valid votes cast.”
“The total of valid votes cast is 13,119,460. This does not change the percentages established for each candidate and the statement made by the President,” the statement read.
