President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo may have won the presidential election, but the success of his next government is hanging by a thread as it is about to be overseen by a hung parliament.
As it stands, there is no clear majority in parliament according to data released by the Electoral Commission. The PNP caucus, which initially had 169 seats, lost 32 of them in the December 7 elections.
The NDC caucus, almost on par with the NPP, has 136 seats with an outstanding result yet to be declared and an independent candidate.
However, in what many have described as an intriguing turn of events, Member of Parliament for Fomena, Andrew Amoako Asiamah, who was expelled from the PNP over his decision to become Independent after deciding not to contest his party’s primaries. , won his seat.
He, according to many, has become the literal representation of the famous biblical quote “the stone that the builders rejected will become the cornerstone.”
For NPP to hold the majority of the seats, Amoako Asiamah’s alignment with them will be key. But with everything that has happened, the question remains, will you be ready to sweep it under the rug and get back to your party?
-I can’t work with Fomena MP – Akufo-Addo-
The president-elect, Nana Akufo-Addo, during one of her campaign trails in the Fomena enclave, categorically announced that she will not be able to work with the Fomena deputy.
His reason was that MP Andrew Amoako Asiamah has disrespected him.
In the words of the presidents; “Anyone who shows up as a member of the PNP but becomes independent is not a true member of the party. Yes, if you are an unconditional member of the party, you will not become independent. Especially when I personally tried to get you involved and you don’t show up. So you don’t respect me and you can’t work with me. I can’t work with anyone who doesn’t respect me. That is why I ask you to vote for NPP ”.
This was an attempt to woo the discontent of the MP who had decided to go independent.
-Go and burn the sea – Napo tells Fomena MP
With similar disdain and aggression, Education Minister Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh, who is also the Manhyia South MP, voiced his resentment towards the MP for his decision.
Napo said, among other things, that the NPP could win without hesitation without Asiamah. But they lost.
Visibly angry Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh said during the campaign; “… They said her name is Asiamah. Listen carefully, if our predecessors hadn’t given us room to compete as well, we wouldn’t have been here. If Atta Boafo had left the match after losing, he would not have been an ambassador now. But if you recently won power for us but the Fomena voters rejected you and you refused to understand, then go and burn the sea. Because it is not the first time that the people of Fomena have changed their deputy ”.
The deputy was subsequently expelled from parliament after the PNP leadership wrote to demand such actions.
The party’s general secretary, John Boadu, wrote: “The party has noted that the member of parliament for the Fomena constituency in the Ashanti region, Hon. Amoako Andrew Asiamah, who was elected to Parliament on the Party’s ballot, he stood for the race as an Independent Parliamentary Candidate. In doing so, he has allegedly vacated his seat in Parliament in accordance with article 97 (1) (g) of the Constitution of the Republic of 1992 ”.
Now, he’s back as the man in the spotlight.
-We welcome you back – NPP to Fomena MP …-
Fully accepting the reality and the changes it could bring to the table, the elected deputy from Fomena has been invited back to the PNP.
During an interaction on CitiNews, NPP Secretary General John Boadu said the party will be willing to accept it, through all processes, if it decides to align itself with them in parliament.
“He still insists that he is a member of the party, but because of his actions, he lost his membership. You can reapply, you can decide to join us. It is not a decision that another body of the National Executive Committee can make. It is still early days, but if he presents himself clearly to join the party, we will take him through the process and see what can be done about it, ”he explained.
In fact, Majority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu confirmed in an interaction with the media that the party has begun making commitments with Andrew Amoako Asiamah for him to side with him and secure majority seats. .
“He will decide. [Currently] there is a commitment on both sides [both NPP and NDC] to put him on his side, ”Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu told JoyNews.
He is waiting to see what decision Asiamah will make before the inauguration of the 8th Parliament on January 6, 2021.
