Sporting Lisbon President Frederico Varandas admits that paid Manchester United could have paid £ 50 million less for Bruno Fernandes if they had waited for the summer transfer window.
Fernandes joined United in a £ 68 million deal in late January, but due to the financial ramifications of the coronavirus, player values and the club’s budgets have declined.
Varandas admits that Sporting would have been forced to lower Fernandes’ selling price if negotiations took place after the Covid-19 outbreak.
He told SIC: ‘The crisis caused by Covid-19 hurts the European football industry in general.
“But, of all the countries, Portugal is the most affected because 50 percent of the income comes from the sale of players.
‘Fernandes sold for £ 68m in January.
‘How much would he be worth today? Maybe £ 17m? £ 27m? Nobody knows.’
Since joining the Red Devils, Fernandes has effortlessly positioned himself in the midfield for United, making him a crucial part of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s plans.
His excellent start at Old Trafford is due to his speed of thought in the attacking areas, as the Portuguese international provided United with the additional equipment in the games they needed.
With Fernandes’ help, United entered the coronavirus blockade in fifth place in the Premier League, and all the way to the FA Cup quarterfinals and anything but the last eight in the Europa League.
