The Alliance for Responsible Governance (AFAG) has advocated for a comprehensive reform of the ruling New Patriotic Party (PNP).
This is because the party narrowly escaped defeat in the recently concluded 2020 general election.
AFAG Secretary General Arnold Boateng in an interview described the poor performance of the nuclear power plant as totally unacceptable, hence the need for a restructuring.
He said the PNP polling station system should be expanded to allow all card-carrying members to participate in regional and national elections, as well as parliamentary primaries.
This, according to Arnold Boateng, will deepen openness and justice in the internal conflicts of the party.
“Most importantly, an expansion of the electoral college will create the opportunity for all card-carrying members to decisively elect their constituencies, regionals, national executives and also parliamentary candidates.”
“This will help minimize vote buying, increasing corruption on a broader scale and will also create the opportunity for those loyal to the competent parties to face future parliamentary primaries.”
He stressed that “it should be noted that the expansion of the polling station system will encourage the grassroots to make the right decisions instead of emboldening people who use gifts to win contests at all levels.”
“The expansion of the polling station system will further deepen the relationship between the rank and file, party executives and members of Parliament,” emphasized Arnold Boateng.
Arnold Boateng urged the government to redouble efforts in the fight against corruption, saying: “The government must make a forceful and demonstrable fight against corruption. The party-government relationship must be improved to ensure adequate communication, implementation of programs and their management ”.
