Frank Lampard rejects Jurgen Klopp’s “ridiculous” claim after Chelsea defeat

Frank Lampard called Jurgen Klopp’s claim that Chelsea are a Premier League title contender “ridiculous” after his team’s 1-0 loss to Everton.

The Blues enjoyed an impressive start to the season, and their nine-game undefeated streak in the top flight sent them third in the table.

Chelsea’s striking form led Liverpool manager Klopp to declare that they were favorites to win the league ahead of their defending champions or Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City.

But the west London club were beaten 1-0 at Goodison Park on Saturday night, with Gylfi Sigurdsson’s penalty in the first half snatching all three points for the hosts.

Lampard dismissed claims that his team is title contender

For Lampard, the result proved that suggestions that his team are title contenders are “ridiculous”, as he highlighted that many of his players are still young.

“That’s life, it’s a long season,” Lampard said. “If some people who talk about us winning the league say we have the best team in the league, it’s ridiculous.

“When you talk about better squads you have to look at the teams that have won them in the last two or three years, their squads are full of forwards and wingers who scored 30 or 40 goals per season.

“Midfielders who have won league titles all over the place, experienced people who have won them and Champions Leagues.

“We have some, we have some, but we also have young players and we are not here as a squad.

“If you ask me in a couple of years and I’m still here and we’ve won a couple of leagues, I’d say yes. But right now people want to look at our team and talk about it.”

Lampard also noted that the narrative surrounding his team dramatically changes tune depending on Chelsea’s most recent result.

The Blues boss added: “It’s gone really fast, I spoke later [3-3 draws with] West Brom and Southampton and we weren’t good enough, rubbish, useless. Now [the 3-1 win over Leeds] Last week we had the best squad and we are going to win it.

“We are probably somewhere in the middle, that’s the reality and we will have to overcome it. It was a great test for us tonight, we did not approve of it, but we will do it in the future.”
