The Northern Regional Security Council has warned the youth of Tamale and its surrounding communities to desist from causing post-election violence.
On Thursday, supporters of the opposition Democratic National Congress took to the streets of Tamale, burning tires between shots to protest the results of the December 7 general election.
Angry party supporters blocked some advantageous routes in the metropolis, preventing travelers from moving.
The northern regional minister, Alhaji Salifu Saeed, who is also the president of the security council, issued a warning to young people to refrain from the event.
“The life of all citizens will be protected. We will make sure that they fulfill their usual duties and no one will be able to take the law into their hands ”.
According to him, the security council will not tolerate any act that seeks to undermine peace and security in the region.
Addressing journalists after the incident, he assured the citizens of Tamale to remain calm and carry out their normal duties.
He said that security agencies are prepared to ensure that normalcy prevails in the metropolis.
“We want to send a warning that anyone arrested for rioting will be dealt with decisively. We will not tolerate any interference from any sector in dealing with those arrested persons.
In addition, he appealed to the traditional leaders of Tamale to call the young rebels to order.
“We ask for restraint and we also assure everyone that the security agencies are in control of the metropolis and that people should feel free to carry out their normal tasks,” he added.
The mayor of Tamale, Hon Iddrisu Musah, for his part, said that his outfit will not allow a sector of the public to endanger the peace of the metropolis.
In addition, he accused the NDC leaders of inciting the youth to destabilize the current peace in the area.
