Barcelona’s presidential candidate, Xavi Vilajoana, has made it clear that he has faith in this current set of players.

He also stated that, with a couple of additions, Barcelona will have the opportunity to fight for silver this season.

“The team dynamics are always changing,” Vilajoana said at a press conference on Saturday.

“Motivation changes from day to day and happiness changes from day to day. There are very good players in that team and more will come.

“They will compete until the end in all competitions. I am calm. The coach is fresh at the door and everything takes time.”

Vilajoana also spoke of the future of Lionel Messi and said that the Argentine needs to clarify whether he wants to stay at Barcelona or not.

“You have to ask him if he wants to play for the best club in the world or not,” said Vilajoana.

“Players, from a sporting point of view, reach a point in their careers where their role changes. It’s not just him.

“When you get older, you need to make a difference in the big games. There are many roles.

“You have to integrate the young players who join the squad. You have to be the leader and captain of the club.

“At the sporting level, motivation is vital, especially if you are a captain. Motivation comes into play when you get knocked down.

“We are seeing right now that when they concede a goal, they do not mount a comeback and that is a sign of lack of motivation. It does not help that there are no fans, because they give you energy.”

“That’s why we have to ask him if he wants to play for the best club in the world. However, it’s not just about convincing him, he has to want to.”

“That desire comes from the player, and if he complements it with arguments that help him make a decision, even better. The first one who should speak is him, Leo Messi.”

Ronald Koeman has come under fire after disgraceful results for Barcelona in LaLiga Santander, followed by a 3-0 loss at home to Juventus in the Champions League, but Vilajoana is not thinking of parting ways with the Dutchman.

“We shouldn’t be talking about coaches in the middle of the season,” he said.

“It is at the end of the year when we should be making judgments. The team will grow when it begins to gain more confidence.”

“Koeman trusts his system and we must trust him too.”
