Sergio Ramos was born in Camas, Seville, about 500 kilometers from Madrid, but is now seen as the king of the most fervent event in the Spanish capital.
Today, Ramos is set to make his 43rd appearance in the Madrid derby when he captains Real Madrid against Atlético de Madrid. It all started when he made his first appearance against Los Rojiblancos in a 3-0 win at the Vicente Calderón Stadium in the 2004/05 season, and has since set the record for appearances in the match.
The 34-year-old has also made a big impact in this derby over the years. This is the only derby in the city that has been played in a major European final. Both teams met in two Champions League finals and Ramos left his mark on both.
However, the moment that will always be remembered the most will be the 93-minute header he scored against current teammate Thibaut Courtois in the 2014 final in Lisbon. His header in the final moments of the match saved his team from certain defeat, and allowed them to win the competition in extra time and seal their 10th European Cup.
Just two years later, Ramos did it again, opening the scoring against Atlético in the 2016 final at the Stadio San Siro. His team went on to win the competition on penalties, with Ramos converting on the penalty shoot-out.
His most recent goal against his club rivals was another penalty, this time in Jeddah, and he also brought Los Blancos some silverware by lifting the Spanish Super Cup.
The child born is Camas will live a long time in the memory of the Madrid derby.
