OccupyGhana has expressed disappointment at the incidents and the increase in electoral violence in the country.
He regretted how such actions consequently led to loss of life and destruction of property after the December 7 elections.
Therefore, it has strongly condemned these acts of violence and demanded that these incidents be investigated and that those responsible face all the rigors of the law.
In a press release on Friday, the lobby group lamented that similar acts of electoral violence or other politically motivated violence have not been controlled, thus creating a culture of impunity, “where people have believed they can get away with it. hers”.
“These do not speak well of a peace-loving country like ours, which is building an enviable credential in the electoral processes in Africa.
“In our still fragile democracy, we must jointly oppose anyone who asks or engages in acts of violence,” the statement said.
The statement follows outbreaks of violence that have occurred after the December 7 elections.
About 5 people have lost their lives in clashes between supporters of the New Patriotic Party and the National Democratic Congress, as well as in clashes with state security agencies.
According to Occupy Ghana, it is even more regrettable when violence is perpetrated by security agencies tasked with ensuring the safety of the electorate.
“We urge the security forces to exercise the highest levels of restraint in dealing with the public. The brutality and unwarranted use of deadly force against those they swore to protect is unacceptable and criminal. “
The non-partisan socio-political pressure group advised young people and supporters of the party to desist from paying attention to the inflammatory statements of some politicians to unleash violence and terror in the country.
It read: “We have also seen around the world the devastation caused when violence breaks out through provocative, thoughtless and irresponsible statements made by politicians to their followers.
“However, when violence occurs, those politicians and their families are nowhere to be found. That is why we must reject instructions from political leaders to engage in any social unrest or violence while their children are sitting comfortably at home safely. We cannot allow these to become infected in Ghana ”.
Therefore, he has called on all stakeholders in Ghana’s electoral process and security agencies to engage with the political parties involved, to prevent further violent incidents or deaths.
“We have been and continue to be a peaceful people. We do not tolerate violence and we must oppose all those who, out of personal ambition, seek to drag this country into the abyss. “
Furthermore, he called on all political leaders to restrain their faithful from unleashing more violence in the country and to vehemently condemn the violence while speaking of peace to the people of Ghana.
“There is no conceivable electoral dispute or disagreement that cannot be resolved in the cold calm of the courts of this land,” the statement read.
