The Police Service said on Friday that civilians in Tamale Metropolis have heavy and sophisticated weapons and ammunition in their possessions.
Shots were heard from people believed to be supporters of the NDC in Tamale.
The sounds gave the police clues as to the type of weapons that were being used.
They were believed to be AK47s, Machine Guns, Handguns, Pump Action, and locally made pistols.
Police Superintendent Mr. Benard Baba Ananga, a northern regional crime officer who spoke to the Ghana news agency, said that if it weren’t for the timely and strategic movement of joint security patrols screwing up the porches of the riots, the situation could have gotten worse.
He noted that while the patrol team was looking for peaceful means to disperse the crowd, there was a heavy attack of shots from unknown people from various directions, targeting the security team that was forced to respond, and managed to disperse the crowd in riots.
Ananga said there were no injuries.
He indicated that the shooters used motorcycles with a passenger that fired sporadically from all directions through Chagnli, Tishigu, Sagani road, Agric Traffic traffic lights among others.
He urged residents to volunteer information to the police and said the city was at peace.
He encouraged people to go about their normal duties and report any suspicious characters to the police.
The GNA found some burnt vehicle tire debris and few burned posters.
In general, the city is quiet and the residents go about their normal tasks.
