A strong call has been made to the entire executive body of the New Patriotic Party (PNP) in the Navrongo Central Constituency to immediately resign from their posts.
The lawsuit, which comes three days after Ghana went to the polls, is linked to what PNP supporters in the constituency have described as the worst humiliation the party has suffered in prominent constituency elections since the country gained independence from colonial control in 1957.
PNP supporters, calling themselves “Kofi Adda Grassroots for Peace and Development (KAG-PED)” and furious at the party’s defeat in parliamentary elections in the constituency, made the call at a press conference called on Thursday.
“We call for the immediate resignation of the entire executive of the PNP of the Navrongo Central Constituency and the Municipal Executive for their inability to keep the party united in the district, hence the party’s humiliating performance in the recently concluded general elections. It is shameful to note that NPP lost in the electoral colleges where the MCE, the president, the first vice president and even the parliamentary candidate herself, Hon. Tangoba Abayage, of origin.
“This defeat is so abysmal. You can imagine the NDC (Democratic National Congress) defeating the PNP by 12,000 votes difference. It is a shame. It is something that has never happened in the annals of politics at Navrongo. How can you have a title and be so defeated that you can’t bounce back right away? “KAG-PED spokesman Martin Agyua said at the conference.
The NPP won 15,821 votes to the NDC’s 26,947 votes in the 2020 parliamentary elections that also saw the Progressive People’s Party (PPP) garner 503 votes and 1,072 rejected votes out of a total of 44,343 votes cast in the constituency.
Kofi Adda disappointed us to hear from his bosses not to become independent: PNP supporters
Navrongo Central Member of Parliament (MP) Joseph Kofi Adda was subjected to “unfair ridicule” after losing his re-election bid to Upper East Regional Minister Tangoba Abayage in the PNP primary elections in June 2020.
He decided to go alone after the defeat. But some higher powers restricted it, according to his supporters, who told reporters at the press conference that they were disappointed that the Minister of Aviation did not go independent as he had decided.
“All the executive, what we know is that they had a badly conceived mind and what they did reduced the efforts that we all made regarding the interest of the PNP. And then they should go. They should go and let us reorganize the party. If Hon. Kofi Adda decides to come in 2024, that is everyone’s prayer at Navrongo. The last time, after the primaries, he said that all Navrongo would become independent.
“If they had allowed it to happen, the seat would have been held. The seat would have been returned to NPP. But it didn’t happen because Kofi Adda is a man who listens. We were disappointed. We were disappointed by Kofi Adda himself because some of us asked him to go independent because we love to party, we didn’t want to lose the seat and we told him if he won we would return the seat to NPP and we would remain NPP. But he listened to his bosses and therefore honorably annulled the decision; did not become independent. And here we are, the executive led us to a very shameful defeat. We don’t want it to happen again. So, we ask that you step aside. That is an honorable thing to do, ”said Gilbert Baase, a member of the group.
