The Director General of the Ghana Health Service (GHS), Dr. Patrick Kuma-Aboagye, has indicated that the GHS will intensify public education on Covid-19 before the reopening of schools next year.

According to Dr. Kuma-Aboagye, to avoid a spike in Covid-19 cases when schools fully reopen, it is imperative that public education about the virus is stepped up across the country.

He also added that, “as we did with SHS 3 and SHS 2 we are going to deliver PPE; not just PPE, disinfectants, etc. for schools to prevent any spread. So the team is working to ensure that we have an adequate number ready for them when the school reopens, not just for the students but also for the teachers, as was done. “

Dr. Kuma-Aboagye said the GHS was also preparing a Covid-19 educational package for children as they prepare to resume next year.

He stated that many of the educational packages prepared by the GHS today are geared towards adults and that producing educational packages geared towards children would prevent them from exchanging nasal masks among others at school.

“We are also going to do an improved education, we are preparing a special package for the youngest children, the first cycle of primary school and the rest. Because all of our messages are directed to adults, we are preparing another message that we hope the media will help us implement how we can make sure that these children get the information they need so that they do not go to school and say ‘I like your red mask, so let’s trade with mine. “So we also need to have a special message for them on how to adhere to that,” Dr. Kuma-Aboagye said in a press release Thursday night.

And finally, to ensure that all protocols are strictly adhered to, the GHS has indicated that surveillance in schools, teacher involvement, and linking of health facilities with schools will be improved to formulate an efficient response framework and fast in case of detected case.

“We are working with [Education Ministry] closely to make sure we have our facilities linked to their schools and that school health teams visit us and make sure all cases are resolved quickly. “
