The majority leader of the VII Parliament of the IV Republic and deputy elected by Suame, Osei-Kyei Mensah-Bonsu, says that the ruling New Patriotic Party (PNP) will have a rather torrid time in the early stages of its parliamentary affairs after the huge loss of seats.
According to him, it is sad and unfortunate that some of the party’s best, knowledgeable, and experienced lawmakers do not return to the House.
At least 28 incumbent lawmakers from the New Patriotic Party (PNP) have lost their parliamentary seats in Monday’s elections.
Speaking in an interview with presenter Bonohene Baffour Awuah in Ghana Kasa at Kasapa 102.5FM on Thursday, Hon. Osei-Kyei Mensah-Bonsu stated that one area that the PNP has lost a lot and that worries him is the Finance Committee of Parliament.
“In Parliament, we do a lot of work on finances, agreements, loans and the preparation of the budget, etc. One person that we have lost in the PNP and that I find very unfortunate is Dr. Assibey Yeboah, who was the chairman of the Finance Committee of Parliament. . He lost in the PNP primaries, do we have a good replacement? Someone we had in mind to fill that gap was Professor Gyan Baffour, who also has great knowledge and experience in finance matters, but also lost Wenchi’s seat and therefore will not return to Parliament. Another person who could also have intervened is former Asikuma Odobeng Brakwa MP, Effah Baafi, who also lost in the primaries. Seriously, with the NPP fold in Parliament on the finance side, we have lost. Now we have to rebuild that side of Parliament, who will be where. That’s on the finance side. “
He added: “In terms of legislation, which is one of the central functions of Parliament, a person who in my absence helped a lot due to his knowledge was the MP from Offinso South Ben Abdellah Banda, who also lost during the PNP primaries, for which did not come back to Parliament. So in terms of legislation, we are not helping ourselves as a party. So, in the future, we have to reorganize and rethink strategies in order to reposition the party in Parliament. To tell the truth, from the initial stages the NPP will have difficult things in parliament, but who knows, a star may emerge among our current group of deputies. Except that in Parliament, regardless of potential, a newcomer cannot be appointed chairman of the committee because he will have to learn the procedures to make it effective and efficient. But nonetheless, we have a new parliament and we must make the most of what we have.
