The Bundesliga is about to return after the coronavirus pandemic caused the suspension of sporting events worldwide.
There are many exciting talents throughout the Bundesliga as it has become a popular destination for British gamers looking for game time. From Jadon Sancho’s silky skills to Ethan Ampadu’s defensive nous, there are plenty of British stars ready to light up our TV screens this weekend.
Here, Sportsmail watches British players playing abroad in the Bundesliga as they prepare to return to action …
Jadon Sancho (Borussia Dortmund)
Jadon Sancho has ignited the Bundesliga this season with some incredible performances for Borussia Dortmund.
The forward has become a contender for the player of the season with 14 goals and 16 assists from 23 league games. His rise to stardom has not gone unnoticed either, as he has become a key figure in the England national team at just 20 years old.
Sancho operates primarily on the left or right wing for Dortmund, which is just four points behind rival Bayern Munich in first place.
Sancho’s future at the club has become a huge topic of conversation, with the Premier League giants hoping to lure the sprinter to the UK this summer in one big money move.
The Englishman originally moved to the Bundesliga in the summer of 2017 from Manchester City, who is now one of the club’s fighters to get him back.
Sancho is now valued at over £ 100 million with Manchester United leading the race for his signature, but with the coronavirus crisis affecting the transfer market, Sancho could stay in Dortmund for a bit longer.
Ethan Ampadu (RB Leipzig, on loan from Chelsea)
Ethan Ampadu is another exciting British talent who is learning his trade in Germany. The Welsh defensive midfielder is on loan from Chelsea this season, but he hasn’t had the experience he probably would have hoped for with RB Leipzig.
While the club has been flying on the field with an incredible Champions League run to the quarterfinals and is fading in the league title race, Ampadu has seen most of it from the bench.
A key asset that the 19-year-old has is his versatility and in the seven games he has appeared this season, with three of them in the Bundesliga, he has played as a central defender.
While borrowing Chelsea is an incredibly exciting talent for the future, he appears to be getting more playing time for his Welsh national team than for his club.
With the intense nature of the league’s comeback, public service players like Ampadu could get more information and more could come along as the league wraps up. He will have a point to prove every time he steps on the field now and he will still have a bright future once he returns to Chelsea.
Rabbi Matondo (Schalke)
At age 19, Rabbi Matondo has enjoyed his great season with Schalke. It has quickly become a fan favorite with Schalke fans for its breakneck pace in attack.
Although small in stature, Matondo is a very complicated client with fast feet and an incredible explosion of acceleration to get out of a tight spot.
The winger has also earned his international colors since Ryan Giggs took over as Wales coach, further increasing the profile and confidence of the attacker, who scored his first high-level goal against RB Leipzig in this period.
Matondo is a product of the Cardiff City academy, but Manchester City picked it up quickly in 2016. However, just like the mistake they made with Sancho, Man City let him go to Germany for £ 8 million.
Welshman have been used sporadically by Schalke this season, with a total of 12 league appearances, some from the bench and others from the start.
Like Ampadu, he could be another cheery young star who could take advantage of the busy soccer schedule at playtime as he continues to learn his trade as a slow and dangerous winger.
Ademola Lookman (RB Leipzig)
Former Everton striker Ademola Lookman is in his first full season in the Bundesliga as a RB Leipzig player after being loaned to the club two seasons earlier.
Lookman has shown many promises in previous seasons, but his return to Leipzig has been disappointing for both the club and the player. He has added only 167 minutes in the Bundesliga this season and has not managed to enter the team, with other talents that overshadowed the young Englishman.
While Leipzig is in contention for both the Champions League and Bundesliga glory, Lookman, like Ampadu, has watched from the side and not impressed in his short cameos.
Emil Forsberg and Marcel Sabitzer have kept Lookman out of action this season and, at 22, he won’t want to rot in the shadows.
The return of the league provides a golden opportunity for Lookman to prove a point to manager Julian Nagelsmann and perhaps draw the attention of a potential suitor for a future move.
Reece Oxford (FC Ausburg)
Reece Oxford is now with FC Ausgburg after a rather turbulent career to date at just 21 years old.
Despite being on a team battling relegation, Oxford, like its time with Borussia Monchengladbach and West Ham United, has not been a mainstay in the starting lineup. In fact, he hasn’t even appeared in a game since early November after an early streak of games earlier in the season.
A few years ago, Oxford was one of the most exciting talents England had to offer, as she quickly made a name for herself in West Ham, but was unable to back it up with consistent performances; a trait that has fallen short once again.
The 21-year-old can play in both the defensive midfield and central defense with his tall stature and comfort on the ball. However, he has not impressed in any of these positions for Ausburg, as it seems that another club is biting him.
If you do manage to get some game time on the return from the Bundesliga, you’ll want to make big improvements to your game in an attempt to regain your place on the starting side.
Jonjoe Kenny (Schalke, on loan from Everton)
Jonjoe Kenny is on loan with Schalke from Everton for the season and has made a great impression during his time in the Bundesliga.
The right-back has lost his place on Everton’s side after Djibril Sidibé’s signing, so he ventured to Germany in hopes of having some playing time. The 23-year-old has not disappointed the German team, which hopes to secure a European place this season and has made 23 appearances from 25 possible matches.
Kenny also found the net this season against Hertha Berlin in August and has accumulated three assists as a valued member of the Schalke organization.
It is likely to play a role for the Germans as they fend off Wolfsburg, Freiburg and Hoffenheim for a place in the Europa League standings before returning to Everton at the end of their loan.
He’s not sure what the future holds for Kenny, but if Everton’s manager Carlo Ancelotti isn’t interested in retaining him, it might be possible to return to Schalke permanently.
