The Democratic National Congress has expressed dismay at what it describes as an “unjustified vote recount” at some collection centers across the country.
The Party said such acts not only contravene the laws governing the electoral process, but also cause “undue delays in the collection of results.”
Speaking in a fourth Party update on the December elections, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, General Secretary of the NDC, said that the laws governing elections only allow the recount to be done at polling stations.
He said the law only allowed a recount at a matching center if a dissatisfied officer (s) had filed a complaint sheet challenging the results of the ballots cast.
The Secretary-General said that it was therefore surprising that many collection centers continued to allow the recount despite the fact that party agents had not filed any formal complaint with polling stations.
“In fact, the counting process cannot be started at the collation center at all, the law is very clear. If the polling station does not agree with any result, it will call a recount at the polling station. AND the President must comply for the first time, ”he said.
“If you are not satisfied, you can request a second count, if the president does not agree with you, then you indicate that you want the contents of a particular ballot box to be counted in the collation center. Only there and then can a box be reopened at a collection center for a count. “
“We wish to report that out of 275 constituencies, the NDC won 141. That put us in a clear majority and will give John Mahama the necessary majority in Parliament to be able to carry out his activities as president.”
“What the clear majority means in a legislature is that the NDC will select the next speaker of parliament, the first vice president will select all the chairmen of the selected and permanent parliamentary committees. That gives us absolute control of the chamber,” he said. additional.
