The president of the Electoral Commission, Jean Mensa, has attributed the Commission’s inability to declare the results of the presidential election to sudden rains and voting delays in some districts.
According to the EC chief, unexpected rains in some centers disrupted the voting exercise on Election Day, causing some districts to vote long after the voting deadline across the country, subsequently affecting the count. and the gathering of votes.
“Naturally, this had an impact on our plans, in the sense that our offices were unable to collect the results and send them to their appropriate locations as planned,” he said.
He also mentioned that the rain had made certain areas, particularly in the hinterland, inaccessible to Commission officials, making it difficult to present the results to the EC regional offices.
“So this caused some substantial delays that caused us to receive the results late, and this explains why the Commission was unable to declare the results as promised at 5pm on Tuesday,” he explained.
However, Jean Mensa was quick to point out that the Commission was working around the clock to ensure that the results were properly collated and due process followed before making a statement.
“As we speak, the Commission has received 14 of the 16 regional results. We at the Colación Nacional center have had representatives of the political parties since yesterday. We had two representatives for each group and they are working with our own staff.
“As the results arrive, the party representatives compare them with what they themselves have received from the region and once they are satisfied that the results that have come to us from the regions are a true reflection of what they have received. put your signatures on it before they inform me of the results as a counting officer for the 2020 presidential elections. Then I certify these results, “he said.
He said that the EC at this time has certified seven of the 14 regional results and will certify the remaining seven in due course.
The remaining two will arrive at the Commission’s headquarters on Wednesday morning, Jean Mensa said.
“We have also put the seven results that we have received, approved and certified in the various social media platforms and the Commission’s website, so we are urging citizens to visit our websites and our social media platforms to review the results of the seven regions that have so far been certified. “
