Former Member of Parliament (MP) for the Fomena constituency, Andrew Amoako Asiamah has won the seat as an independent candidate.
Amoako Asiamah will return to Parliament after his post was declared vacant by the Speaker of Parliament, Professor Aaron Mike Oquaye.
The event followed Asiamah’s decision to run for reelection as an independent candidate after losing the New Patriotic Party primaries.
He obtained 12,805 votes to win the parliamentary elections in Fomena on Monday.
Mr. Asiamah defeated the PNP candidate, Mr. Philip Ofori-Asante, who obtained 10,798 votes, and the NDC candidate, Christina Ama Ranson, who obtained 2,608 votes.
Another candidate, Eric Appiagyei, had 158 votes.
The total of votes cast was 26,616 with 26,369 valid votes and 247 rejected votes.
Background
PNP Secretary General John Boadu, in a statement on October 13, 2020, said that by running as an independent candidate, Asiamah had lost her party membership under article 3 (9) of the party constitution.
“For the avoidance of doubt, Article 97 (1) (g) of the Constitution states that: A member of Parliament will vacate his seat in Parliament if he leaves the party of which he was a member at the time of his election to Parliament. Join another party or seeks to remain in Parliament as an independent member, ”said Boadu.
The party subsequently wrote a petition to parliament demanding that the seat be declared vacant.
This was accepted by the Speaker of Parliament, Professor Mike Ocquaye.
